The New VP

An excerpt from The Point Academy

“I’m gonna be the first Rock Star vermeologist!” Eleanora said.

“A what?”

“Vermeologist. It’s a person who studies worms.”

“Oh! I get it now.”

“Get what?” Eleanora asked.

“Why everyone calls you ‘Worm”. I have a nickname, too. My name is Giovanna, but everyone calls me Gio, like “g-e-o” as in geography.”

Eleanora took a step back. She frowned and she shook her head. “No. ‘Worm’ is not a nice nickname. It’s offensive to worms! My name is Eleanora. I should be called Eleanora.”

Gio’s jaw dropped. Was this kid for real? Who thought about hurting a worm’s feelings? She wasn’t sure what to say to that.  So, she did what her dad said to do in these situations: walk away.  “Um, okay, Eleanora,” she said slowly. She stood up and started to slide along the wall back towards the school’s entrance. She was going to make sure to keep her eye on this strange girl.

Eleanora smiled at Gio like it was Christmas morning.  “That’s it! I’ve decided. Welcome to the Environmental Club, Vice President Gio!  You’re perfect. We’re gonna make a great team.” She took Gio by the hand and pulled her back towards the office. “Now he’ll have to sign our charter. There’s two of us now!”
