Rule 1: “Keep Your Head Down”
“Looks like it’s your turn, dear. Mr. Olson will see you now.” Mrs. Areti said, cupping the mouthpiece of the phone. She pointed towards a closed door with a small window with a large “Wet Paint” sign taped to it. Gio could make out Mr. Olson’s name on the door, but the word “Principal” looked like it was going to snatch her up and throw away the key.
Gio hesitated. She looked around the room and spotted another student waiting in the only chair. She recognized him from earlier. He was the kid that had been digging in the dirt. He was the one the other kids called Worm. Was he there to report those kids for bullying? Did he think Gio was with that group? Oh, God! She hoped not. She wasn’t a bully. She hated bullies. Gio felt like she was going to be sick. “Um…I have to go to the bathroom,” she announced. “Worm! He can go first,” she pointed to the student.
The student glared at Gio. “My name is Eleanora! I’m-”
Gio had already dashed out the office door. She couldn’t remember which direction the bathroom was. Turning left, she headed towards the school’s entrance. Outside, she leaned against the wall and bent over. Her heart raced, and she took shallow breaths. She couldn’t get into trouble on her second day of school. She didn’t do anything!
